UP Council Unanimously Opposes Tacoma Prop 1

Last night, the University Place Council voted unanimously to oppose Tacoma's Proposition 1, a 33% tax increase on Tacoma Power (as it applies to University Place ratepayers).

Gary Brackett, the Chamber's Business & Political Manager, was requested by the Chamber's West Side Branch Board of Directors, to represent their position opposing Tacoma's Prop 1 during public comments before the University Place Council.

After hearing an issue presentation from University Place City Manager Steve Sugg and the public comments, the University Place Council suspended its rules to consider the Resolution 735 opposing Tacoma's Prop 1.  Final action resulted in the adoption of Res. 735.

University Place Candidates Talk Business at Chamber's Forum

As part of the Chamber’s University Place Candidates Forum held last night at Curtis High School, candidates for University Place City Council answered business focused questions.

Randy Walden, UP/Fircrest Division Chair, asked the candidates about development, business retention and priorities on the Council.

(l. to r. Kent Keel, Steve Smith, Ken Campbell, Chris Nye, Caroline Belleci, Howard Lee and emcee Randy Walden)

Placing business interests front and center with elected officials is important to the Chamber not only once candidates are elected, but also in determining who to support.

Business Working Together

Business leadership organizations around Pierce County are working together.

The Puyallup/Sumner Chamber, the Fife Milton Edgewood Chamber, Gig Harbor Peninsula Chamber and the Lakewood Chamber have joined efforts with the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber and its South County and University Place-Fircrest divisions.  The Master Builders Assn. of Pierce County, the Tacoma-Pierce County Assn. of Realtors and the Tacoma Downtown Merchants Group are also part of the coalition.  The Economic Development Board for Tacoma-Pierce County and the City of Tacoma are involved too.

All these groups are working together encouraging their businesses to help determine the local environment for business and to assess their own business success index. The effort will lead to goals improving our business community. If you wish to be a part of this survey both for the good of the community and to assess your own business, take the survey!

Chamber Division Supports UP Licensing Option

The City of University Place is considering the transfer of the processing of business licenses from the City to the Washington State Department of Licensing.

This issue has been reviewed and discussed by the Chamber’s UP-Fircrest Division Board. A resolution supporting this change in procedure was approved by the UP-Fircrest Division Board and forwarded to the City’s economic development commission (EDC).

Recently, the EDC made their recommendations in part based on the Chamber’s support of this issue.

A final decision will be made by the City of University Place City Council in the near future.
